Low Thia Khiang: Our Singapore's True Optimus Prime and Unsung Hero

Every time, I walk into Popular Bookstore, TIMES Bookstore and Kinokuniya, Lee Kwan Yew's biography always gets displayed at their front shelves. Mr Lee must be collecting royalties for this book.

I used to remember Chiam See Tong and Low Thia Khiang as troublemakers. Don't get me wrong. In the 1990s, we only had SPH and Mediacorp to base our judgements on and the two of them always gets the short-changed.

My mother, being pro-PAP at that time in 1990s, used to say to me when I misbehave, that I should be another Chiam See Tong in Parliament coz he is a 'troublemaker'.
And when Dr Chee Soon Juan caused a mess and fell out with Chiam See Tong's party, I really thought that Chiam See Tong was in cahoots with Dr Chee and they would protest, scream and go on hunger strikes.

For Low Thia Khiang, my mother used to laugh at his Chinese-accented English in Parliament. My mother, being English educated, always told me to brush up on my English or I would look like a clown like Low Thia Khiang.
At that time, I believe a politician like Lee Kwan Yew who spoke in British English would have more credibility than Low Thia Khiang.

I was wrong.

Last time, I wrote about Hougang: A Special Breed of People and received many likes. Click onhttp://therealsingapore.com/content/hougang-special-breed-people

Time and time again, Mr Low has proven to be a true warrior when he needs to fight but a gentleman to his adversaries.

When he won a seat in Parliament, PAP MPs took cheap potshots at him, saying rubbish will pile many stories high. Flats in Hougang also were threatened for declining value in their property and lift upgrading was their last priority.

He was threatened with a lawsuit in 2006 GE by Mr Lee Kwan Yew over the James Gomez issue. Recently, in Parliament, he was insulted by PAP Lim Wee Kiak when Mr Lim criticized Mr Low for his hearing aid.

In fact in 2011, after GE2011, he was gracious enough to ask Mr Lee to have a photo taken with him in the Istana. Click on http://ahmadintaiwan.blogspot.sg/2011/05/perfect-ending-to-2011-general.html

Yet, he didn't let these unfazed him and made many objections and recommendations in Parliament on issues that affect every Singaporean such as CPF, transport issues, housing policies and the controversial White Paper 6.9 million.

Recently, an SPH reporter interviewed him and he said that he habors no intention of being the next Prime Minister. A humble man but for many Singaporeans, we definitely hope that he will be our next Prime Minister.

Many do not know about his private life. Some of my friends have asked me to write an unauthorised biography of him and hopefully, this book will out-sell Lee Kwan Yew's.

But then again, if I don't have much details about his private life, I would not be able to do my job as a biography writer.

He is the Optimus Prime from the "The Transformers" cartoon.

Optimus Prime is the leader of the Transformers and works as a powerful force of goodness, courage and wisdom in the battle against the evil Decepticons. He first tries to find peaceful solutions to conflicts, but when battle lines are drawn, he becomes a fierce warrior capable of overpowering vast enemy forces to achieve his goals.
