It is common these days to hear our men questioning what are they defending in the midst of so many foreigners and their assets in the country. I would like to ask, do they know what they are defending in the first place?
First, let us ask ourselves, did the PAP or the people build a country? No. The PAP did not. Neither did we.
The concept of Singapore as a country was borne out of convenience. The PAP wanted the governance of Singapore and needed it to be independent for them to have complete control. From the international community, the PAP needed them to recognize our sovereignty so that they can`t interfere with local politics. For us, as long as we benefit economically we excuse ourselves from our political responsibilities. We simply perpetuate their propaganda and our belief of a country and take pride in our annual celebrations with them (in their party gears). That’s what a country we are.
If the PAP wanted to build a country out of Singapore, they would have treasured our sovereignty and Article 6 which provides for its surrender/sales would not exist. If we treasured our sovereignty, we would have opposed the inclusion of Article 6 in our constitution. But we didn’t.
Without valuing our sovereignty, what is the SAF protecting? The country or the constitution? Which one takes priority? This is complicating because the moment our men pledge to defend the constitution they are betraying the very first core value of the SAF – loyalty to the country. But if at any point the government decides to alter the oath to exclude the constitution, then the SAF becomes a private (unconstitutional) army instead of a national defense force, and they have no legal rights to conscript. Are we going to allow it then?
I hope we can continue our awareness and discussions from here.
