According to the Rakuten Shopping Secrets Survey, 45% of Singaporeans admitted that they would re-gift unwanted Christmas Presents.
This was also the highest figure among all the countries surveyed.
The survey took responses from over 1000 Singaporeans and another 6000 from other countries including US, UK, Spain, Germany, Indonesia and Taiwan.
The survey also found that Singaporeans in general feel that Christmas is an excuse to go shopping. Fewer people in Singapore said that Christmas was a time to spend with family.
Singaporeans also reported having received gifts that they don’t like and pretending to like it in front of the person that gave it to them.
Over 66% of Singaporeans said that they have received unwanted Christmas gifts before and 87% of those said that they pretended to like the gift.
Overall, shopping and gift-giving is a big part of the Singaporean Christmas with respondents spending an average 21.4 hours Christmas shopping each year. This is the second highest of the countries surveyed with Spain claiming top spot at 21.8 hours.
In terms of the amount of time spent shopping for a particular person, Men spent the most time shopping for their spouse at an average 75minutes while women preferred to spend longer shopping for another female friend (up to 103 minutes)
In terms of the type of gifts Singaporeans don’t like to receive, they include stationary, something naughty, flowers, soft toys and massage or spa vouchers.
