Dear The Real Singapore,
I refer to the article: "WHY ARE WE PAYING $16K TO AN MP WHO CAN’T EVEN STAND AND ATTEND MEET-THE-PEOPLE SESSION?"
I can see that Han Ming has hit a raw nerve with this article. But I can't help but agree with the points raised.
First and foremost, MPs and ministers are voted in to serve the people... and.. as LKY himself has reiterated, "there is no such thing as a free meal". If the person, MP or minister, is not carrying out responsibilities of an MP or a minister.. my question is.. should that person still be drawing the pay of that position?
All those comments here who say "he contributed", etc etc. Look, nobody is denying that LKY did contribute, in whatever way he did.. for Singapore and Singaporeans. During Singapore's "birth" as a nation, he stood tall and gathered people together to pull this country through.. and together, we all made it to what it is TODAY.. yes.. TOGETHER!! LKY himself, could not have achieved all that we see now in Singapore.
So, the question is.. should we still pay him his ministerial or MP's pay for all his contribution? Or, should we let him retire and rest and enjoy the twilight of his years? I say, let him rest. We should not tax him anymore. We should take up the mantle and do what we can for Singapore and Singaporean. LKY has done what he can, and he should have his nice earned rest. Would you all not agree?
And here liee, what I believe, to be the one thing many are thinking. Yes, LKY did a lot.. but does that mean we, Singaporeans, continue to pay him and especially when he may lack the physical capacity to do a proper role of an MP or a minister? For those LKY supporters, ask yourselves. Would you 'WORK YOUR FATHERS' to death? Or allow them to have time to relax and spend time and not stress anymore over work?
LKY is well over 80.. I, for one, say we should let him shed the responsibility of taking care of Singapore and Singaporeans. Let the man rest.. let him spend time with his grandchildren or great grandchildren. Please.. don't let him work until he dies in his office.
How did we come to the term to name LKY as the "Founding Father". SIngapore was found by Sang Nila Uthaman.
If it is because of the success of Modern SIngapore. Singapore's success is because of its economic success. That credit should go to Goh Keng Swee. I do agree it is not easy to manage a group of interllects. For that credit should be given credit but not as a Founding Father.
He made several judgement errors like the stop at two, graduate mothers, joining Malaysia, playing up the Malaysia for Malaysians , detention with trail, suppressing opposition etc. hence his political career comprises of both positives and negatives. He contributed but earned a salary for the contributions and also enjoyed other financial and other benefits.
The question is should we pay him ex gracia payment for his past contributions. I will say yes for being the leader of the team that built modern SIngapore. The amount subject to approval by Parliament.
But should he continue to be a MP and receive 16k allowance. It is tied to job scope. If a civil servant cannot carry out his job due to ill health do we allow him to stay on the job and continue to pay or transfer him to a lesser demanding job with a reduced pay.
The same principle should apply across the board not withstanding personalities. As the Leader of Modern Singapore who coordinated Singapore's success, we should not put him and he should not put himself in a position of redicule. Retire gracefully Mr Lee, we love and respect you and do appreciate your contributions. Save us from the humiliation of having to read unkind words thrown at you. I have known you as a practical realist.
Based on LKY's and PAP own philosophy, nobody should be paid for not working.
Singapore does not have social welfare like western countries.
