Dear The Real Singapore,
The real reason why PM Lee says Singaporeans do not need a degree is because they do not want Singaporean to be too smart for their own good and realise how stupid we have been in the past to have deemed to be living in a 1st world City but in actuality we are no different from North Korea. I would leave the van of worms of restrictions on our freedom of choice and information aside and focus only on this topic of Singaporeans do not need a degree.
There is only one reason: For those who are not aware, foreigners working in Singapore holding EP or Employment Pass HAVE TO be a degree holder before their EP Pass is approved. It is the criteria to apply for a EP Pass. Go check on MOM website if you do not trust this fact.
But then this question comes to mind, why is it that MOM is demanding foreigners to be a degree holder in order to approve them to work in Singapore but then the SG government now says Singaporeans do not need degree? Won't that cause a lot of unemployment in PMETs jobs because Singaporeans don't have the qualifications to apply for these jobs?
There is also currently no limit on the number of EP Pass workers a company can have which means a company can now have all the managers and CEOs being EP pass holders while all the low-skilled jobs can be filled by Poly and ITE Singaporeans.
No it won't. Why? It's because they have found the simple solution to solve this problem of filling up PMETs jobs which requires degree with EP holders. Plus the best part about this solution is that EP holders do not have voting rights unlike a well educated Singaporeans degree holder. See the whole picture?
So for the 60% percent of imported Singaporeans and true blue native Singaporeans, don't be an idiot and think about the inception "wonderful" life you have been led to believe and make the right decision in the next GE.
