I refer to Christians in Singapore Support City Harvest.
One of my former boss, AC, is a devout Christian.
She would like to wear crucifixes around her neck, display Holy Bible on her workplace shelf and then play Christian worshipping songs. She would also love to show off her religion by telling us that she is going on 2 weeks holiday to Israel to witness Jesus Christ birthplace and often go for miracle healing sessions.
Sometimes, she would also display instances of sheer madness and insanity.
Before starting lunch, she would clasp her hand together to pray and then after that, she would slam her fists hard on the table and demanded to know, "HAVE YOU ACCEPTED JESUS CHRIST?!" in a loud voice.
At that time, I was naïve so I didn't know but everyone around us looked at her like she was a lunatic that escaped from IMH.
Everyone in the office avoided her like a plague as she would spout Jesus Christ verses even if it means ruining and spoiling relationships.
She also had serious character flaws in her work.
She was a single mother and had many conflicts with her 10 year old son.
She would sometimes call him up during lunch and scold his son and using "fuck you" on him to remind him to do his homework.
She was also caught many times abusing our printers and photocopiers to print her Bible study notes for her Wed class after work. The next day, she would end up being foul-tempered as her Wed class sometimes made her tired as she probably slept late.
But our Executive Director, being a Christian, always found excuses to protect her, reminding us that she is a single mother so urged us to be more tolerant of her bad behaviour.
Although our Executive Director was a Catholic, and she is from another denomination, both of them found solace in each other through religion and sometimes, I caught her emailing some of her Bible study notes to him.
Why is worshipping such an addiction?
Is it the same kind of addiction that drug addicts have? That porn addicts have?
This situation made me start thinking about how religion is often linked to a sense of loyalty and mutual understanding.
Recently, many Malay Muslim Singaporeans raised their arms in protest when they said that more Malays should serve the higher ranks in army, including the very special ops in Gombak where they spy on Malaysia.
What would happen if Christians in Malaysia were to use the same tactics on Singapore Christians under the guise of religion and launch an attack on us?
Would religion over-ride everything?
