In the simplest of all forms, two wrongs do not make a right.
I am a homosexual, and indeed I have been subjected to mild discrimination one time or another. But I have been lucky being in this country - I haven't been called names, nor beaten up or raped. When one accidentally refers me as a guy (especially if I suit up), I find it amusing.
Perhaps a little traumatizing too, when being shouted at in the Ladies. But it must've been more traumatizing for the old lady who thought a guy was next to her cubicle listening to her pee.
I don't mind being stared at - my hair is blonde and I have 9 tattoos littered around my body like a sticker book.
As a result of being a minority (I have no numbers here but God has it been hard finding lesbians to date), I am inevitably more sensitive to tolerance. Coupled with the diversity of my family, I understand the importance of tolerance in a society.
The lack of which has lead to one death too many.
The lack of which has lead to one war too many.
I detest Lawrence Khong and I pity him. I genuinely do.
But he is for God to judge. Not me. Perhaps he will at some point commit a crime Amos Yee style but I'm not about to let my evening be ruined by a bigot like him.
The call for boycott of IKEA Singapore for sponsoring Lawrence Khong's circus act by some homosexuals is not one I understand.
I understand the angst if IKEA Singapore has never sponsored a gay play by an openly gay director. But they have.
I understand the angst if IKEA Singapore had banned homosexuals as either customers or employees. But they haven't.
The call for boycott is akin to intolerance too. IKEA Singapore should reserve their right to engage whoever they want as a merchant on their pretty little loyalty programme, and unhappy homosexuals reserve their right to not shop at IKEA anymore. But to call for a boycott? When you call for one on behalf of other homosexuals, you are as big as an instigator as Lawrence Khong is.
Fight intolerance with grace. Not hatred.
