MOM must be more Proactive in Catching Fake Degree Holders

Foreigners using fake degrees to get a job here are currently making the news now. It was revealed that IDA hired one foreigner, Ms Nisha Padmanabhan, whose MBA was from one of the notorious degree mills.

IDA then tried to assuage the issue by stating that her MBA from Southern Pacific University was not a factor and that Nisha was employed based on her degree certificate.

Im sure Nisha's resume includes stating her MBA qualification. When someone puts a qualification on her resume that was never earned, then there's integrity issue. It's also meant to place that person in a favourable position for employment and hoodwinking employers into thinking she had rightfully earned it.

I now wonder what was declared to MOM when IDA applied for her work pass. Usually, we can state up to 2 qualifications on the application. If her MBA was also declared when applying for her work pass, then it is a clear case of fraudulent declaration.

If it was stated in the application that she possessed an MBA, and MOM had approved the application, then MOM had not done its due diligence by approving Ms Nisha's application.

It is time that MOM set up a department (if it had not done so) to solely look into all these fake qualifications turning up at our doors and be up to date on the list of unis with ambiguous credibility. Already Singaporeans are placed at a disadvantage when we open our doors to foreigners, it is further compounded when we also have to compete with fake qualifications.
