Will Social Media Compromise our Security?

Dear TRS,

I want to raise a concern that I have about some people inadvertently giving away sensitive information online thank to social media.

I know a local Serviceman who constantly takes photos and uploads them to social media. When he uploads them, they are also always tagged with a location.

One day this fellow definitely can compromise a mission by giving away sensitive information in both photos and also in location tags. This is because of an obsession with social media.

His is not an isolated incident, it has happened to even the Russian's forces in Ukraine where personnel upload their photo to Instagram with location tagged:

It is all right to take photo in my opinion for the sake of memories when we are old or when we are demoralized there are photo like this where we had fun to fall back on.

Yet this fellow hide his name, rank and formation badge. Didn't brother to hide his buddy's and also tagged his location, just so people can still "know" he is from the elite forces.

You know what kill a cat or a group of cats? Ego.

It is a tough battle for MINDEF when these days youth love to take photo and upload them online which can compromise with missions.

This serviceman was activated for a secret mission and somehow he took a photo, uploaded it online and mention his weekend was burn because of a secret mission.

Is this ok?

Regards,

G
