Leveling the playing field for civil servants
According to the Straits Times news report ”Singapore Budget 2015: Greater opportunities for non-graduates to rise in civil service” (Mar 11) - “From Aug 1, non-university graduates joining the civil service will be hired under the same scheme as university graduates.
This means that they will have greater opportunities to advance, and when they reach a certain grade, will be assessed for performance and potential in the same way as their graduate colleagues at the same level.”
This is a welcomed move which should have been done much earlier.
It underscores the principles of non-discrimination and leveling the playing field.
Level playing field for Singaporeans
By the same token, we should level the playing field for all Singaporean workers.
We are being discriminated in favour of foreigners because
… they don’t pay CPF – cheaper for employers
… they don’t need to take leave for National Service reservist training
… they cannot get pregnant if they are work permit holders
… they cannot change jobs as they are typically on a two-year contract – no turnover problems for employers
… they are generally willing to work for lower pay
… they can come as tourists to apply for jobs and may thus be more desperate to take on any job with any conditions
Ministers’ pay
And they have the cheek to say that Ministers’ salary hasn’t increased in the last three years, whereas their private sector benchmark has increased by three per cent!
