Translation from the original Chinese: 「枉」为新加坡人
The law, more often than not, is just for show, a legalizing process to legitimize unfairness. Justice, more often than not, is just a skull with makeup on, a fig leaf to cover the shame.
Yesterday, after reading “the Ministry of Manpower takes action against local company who discriminated against Singaporeans”, I felt a big lump in my throat. On the surface, justice seemed to have triumphed over evil. However, as the saying goes, when virtue rises one foot, vice rises ten feet (道高一尺、魔高一丈). Singaporeans, especially the 13 who were unfairly laid off, your country is not there to protect you, you are losers forever.
I do not understand, since the fact of the company’s discrimination against Singaporeans has already been established, why the Ministry of Manpower does not uphold justice by ordering the company to reinstate the 13 Singaporean employees, and repatriate those foreigners who unfairly robbed the Singaporeans of their jobs?
According to the MOM,
The MOM investigations revealed that 13 Singaporeans were laid off and the vacancies were later filled by foreign workers. The rationale of the ex-employees’ poor work performances and inadequate qualifications were not substantiated.
What I cannot understand is since the layoffs could not be substantiated, it means the company has completely violated the interests of Singaporeans. Then, whether out of kindness or reason, the MOM should order that these 13 Singaporeans be reinstated, even though MOM may, on humane grounds, be sympathetic towards the foreign replacements.
However, what is happening right before our eyes? It is really “pointless” for the poor Singaporeans to be Singaporeans! The MOM has merely curbed Prime Gold, the company which discriminated against Singaporean workers, of work pass privileges for 2 years. Is this not really stupid? After all, the act of “discrimination” has been successfully executed, the intended purpose of replacing Singaporeans with their own kind has already been achieved. So, what is 2 years, even 5 or 10 years, or forever? Many companies simply do not need to employ new workers anymore.
Therefore, MOM’s “non-punitive” measure to curb the company’s work pass privileges for 2 years, inevitably becomes a precedent in the “punishment” of companies which discriminate against Singaporean workers. Don’t you agree? All you need is to “boldly axe” some foreign employees, and get prepared for no new workers for 3 to 5 years.
Alas, the innocent captain, the innocent chief officers, the innocent chief engineers and the innocent seamen, although Singapore is your country, the 13 of you just have to resign to your fate, who asked you to be unfortunate enough to be “SINGAPOREANS”?
