1 Employer Penalised

According to the Straits Times news report “Marine firm banned from hiring foreign workers for discrimination against locals” (Dec 29) – “A local marine company has been banned from hiring foreign workers for two years after the Manpower Ministry (MOM) found that it discriminated against Singaporeans.

The MOM had discovered that Prime Gold International had sacked 13 Singaporean workers and replaced them with foreign workers.

This was after the workers complained to the MOM in June. The ministry said that it investigated the complaints and found the reasons cited by the firm for sacking the workers – poor work performances and inadequate qualifications – were not substantiated.

It said in a statement on Monday that the company had “denied Singaporeans fair opportunities for employment and career development”, and that the company’s move “affects the livelihood of Singaporeans already in employment”.

After thousands of postings on discrimination?

The ministry said that it was the first time it imposed such a ban, but it did not say when the ban started.” – After the thousands of postings on the internet about employers’ discriminating against Singaporeans – don’t you find it incredulous that finally – only one employer is taken to task?

How many complaints has MOM received?

The MOM should disclose how many complaints of discrimination it has received?

Don’t you feel that the penalty is rather light?

Does it mean that Prime Gold can still keep all the foreign workers that it now has? What percentage of the company’s work force are foreigners, PRs and Singaporeans?

And what compensation or redress is there for the 13 sacked Singaporeans?

Can still don’t employ any Singaporeans?

Can the company just simply continue to employ mostly PRs and foreign spouses on letters of consent as they are not counted in the foreign workers’ quota and no foreign work passes need to be applied for or reported to the MOM?

1 employer penalized after letting in 774,900 foreign workers and 479,434 new PRs/citizens

Statistically, it is incredulous that after creating  an estimated 349,000 and 774,900 jobs to locals and foreigners respectively, and granting 333,901 new PRs and 145,533 new citizens from 2007 to June 2014 – only one employer has been penalized?
