"Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?" Latin for "Who will guard the guards?" is the perfect expression for the sorry state of Singapore's current political climate.
As 2014 comes to a close, we suddenly see the ubiquitous SG50 logo appearing everywhere. But the birthday celebrations have easily been eclipsed by the anticipation of the next General Elections. My plea for voters during the next GE is not to be too concerned with the charade that political parties churn out during the elections to entice voters, but on the aim to help Singapore as a whole. Right now the PAP government monopolises literally every facet of our lives, from housing to media. But if the PAP is the honourable self-proclaimed guards they claim to be, then who, in turn, will guard them?
Some political diversity is required, not so much to problem-solve or to satisfy the public, but more to protect the government from spiralling into chaos via complacency (especially since the media - the traditional watchdog - has been so tamed by the government).
Of this I implore the voting public that whichever side of the fence you sit on, the ruling party or the opposition, that you aim to reclaim these liberties of an autonomous, unrestricted media as well as an accountable government as you vote for your leaders in the next GE.
