I APPLAUD National Development Minister Khaw Boon Wan's efforts to help different groups meet their housing needs and enable families to live closer together ("HDB to focus on helping families live close together"; Tuesday).
Currently, singles are unable to buy a Build-to-Order flat in a mature estate where their parents are living.
This poses a problem, especially if they are the main caregivers of their elderly parents.
If they are given an opportunity to live closer to their parents, it would give them peace of mind. It would also be of great comfort to their parents.
As the backlog of first-timer demand has been cleared, and Mr Khaw's focus shifts to meeting the needs of singles and low-income families, perhaps it is timely to explore the possibility of allowing singles to buy two-room flats in mature estates.
