Related: Govt to Build Crematorium Next to SengKang West BTOs without Consulting Residents
Buyers of the HDB BTO project, Fernvale Lea, which will finish construction in 2015, have expressed concerns about the plan to build a columbarium next to their future residence.
The columbarium will be built by Australian funeral services company, Life Corporation.
According to them, the plan for the columbarium which will be integrated into a Chinese temple was not made clear to them before they made the purchase. Neither was it stated in the BTO sales booklet.
The main concern among many is that the columbarium may affect the value of the flat.
Both HDB and URA however have dismissed the concerns, saying that the town map indicated that the area next to the BTO had been gazetted as being for "places of worship".
It was noted on the map that "places of workship may include columbarium as an ancillary use".
Effectively, HDB and URA appear to be telling residents that they should have read the fine print before making the purchase. Not only that, they should have made further enquiries on what the term "places of worship" entails.
Are you one of those affected? Will you live next to a columbarium if given the choice?
