As a true blue born & bred in Singapore Singaporean, I am sad, angry and dismay to read that a fellow Singaporean was bullied in such a manner in our motherland!
Worse, he was so fearful that he had to call in police during the work dispute. At least he got the guts to later report the case to a third party, albeit from a safer location where presumably, there are no FTs around to surround him.
Perhaps I was more fortunate than others in that I am working overseas and get to see more and learn more. I learnt to be more hungry and to fight unyieldingly. In fact, I am so localized that some people say I fit our Founding Father LKY’s phrase of “cheaper better faster”.
I can see that the workers overseas are smart, savvy, streetwise, know how to protect their rights and will not hesitate to defend their interests. They are a world of difference compared to Singaporean who are, like what our Founding Father said, “daft”, as exemplified by the Cold Storage 7v1 incident.
That 7v1 incident will never have happen in my overseas workplace because everyone knows that each will stand up to their own interest and dare to fight it out to the last, so no one will ever dare to intimidate their fellow colleagues in such a manner.
Now, if you are an employer, do you prefer a smart, savvy, streetwise worker who knows how to defend himself and the company, or do you want a “Daftie” who will meekly dial “999″ wheneve anything happens? Now, you know why Singapore need FTs, right? Because Singaporeans are daft, not smart (means stupid), not savvy, not streetwise and dare not defend themselves!
You think just because you are born Singaporeans, our country (Singapore) needs to ensure you get a good cushy job and a nice HDB flat? Hey, this is 21st century age of globalization where everyone competes hard. Like what Founding Father LKY said, “there is no free lunch”. There is no room for this type of daft complacent thoughts!
Ok, enough of criticizing. As one secondary kid asked “Why do you keep asking me for solutions? Why don’t you provide me with the solutions?”
Fair fair. As someone with valuable overseas exposure, making myself both a FT and LT (local talent) at the same time, I will provide Singaporeans with the solution and remedy to our problem, and how to make ourselves more employable, smart, streetwise…..etc
First, we ask ourselves, why will a big adult act like a coward in the Cold Storage incident? A person will not become like this all of a sudden. This must have been something ingrained in him when he is young. Everyone has different parents, yet Singaporeans are considered daft, so the reason is not due to parents. The reason must be something common to all Singaporeans. What is this thing that is common to all Singaporeans and make Singaporeans DAFT?
SIMPLE! Our Education System devised by MOE and which has been managed by PAP since we are an independent country! So you have a part, PAP, which manages our MOE solely for 49 years, and yet churn out people who, in the word of our Founding Father Lee Kuan Yew, “Daft”! Hence, MOE and its top manager, PAP, needs to bear responsibility for educating hordes of daft Singaporeans!
Second, to put all blame onto MOE may be unfair to MOE. What is another thing common to all male Singaporeans? Obvious right, NS! In NS, especially SAF, what do you learn? You learn to be obedient, disciplined, take commands, don’t question, don’t talk back, don’t fight back, or else Sergeant Major will say “I will charge you! And you go Detention Barracks!”.
I am not at all surprised that a Singaporean male, after going through 2 years of “learn to be obedient, disciplined, take commands”, will dare to fight back unless when instructed by his PS/PC/OC/CO or the government. Now, who manages Mindef and requires all Singaporean males to serve NS? PAP, right? Plus, nowadays, PAP also hire so many retired SAF generals/admirals to be their top management!
Conclusion:
Singaporeans are daft, stupid, not streetwise, not savvy, and easy to push around, even when on their home ground. This is a systemic behavior caused by systemic flaws in 3 important institutions, MOE, Mindef, PAP.
As we need MOE and Mindef, the only way to solve this will be to vote out PAP asap, and overhaul our education system to produce really talented people needed for this age of globalization such as Steve Jobs and Ma Yun.
