In the report “National Stadium pitch under fire ahead of Brazil vs Japan clash” (Oct 14), Brazil coach Dunga voiced concern over the state of the National Stadium pitch.
Similar concerns were raised when Juventus played here recently and its coach cited the condition of the pitch as the reason for not fielding star striker Carlos Tevez.
I am curious to know why we have to invest in lighting equipment to expose the pitch to artificial light in sunny Singapore. I wonder if the stadium design contributes to the lack of sunlight exposure.
One of the reasons given for the poor condition of the pitch is the number of events held at the stadium.
Recently built stadiums in Europe, such as the Emirates Stadium and the Allianz Arena, host football matches at least once a fortnight, besides other events. Their pitches do not appear to have the same issues our National Stadium is experiencing.
I wonder whether due consideration was given to the amount of sunlight entering the stadium when the various design proposals were under deliberation.
The National Stadium certainly has an iconic design, but is the design practical too?
