These days the Lions are mere pushovers when they face big Asian teams. Singapore has not been able to overcome stronger opponents on a fairly consistent basis since 1984. Now our footballers can only compete against ASEAN teams.
Football is the only sport in Singapore that can attract a full house at the National Stadium. But Singaporeans are more interested in English football than local football.
The S-League is viewed by many as somewhat of a joke because hardly anyone is interested in following it. Among your family members, relatives, friends, colleagues or classmates, how many actually bother to go to a stadium to watch an S-League match?
And how many current national players are household names the way Quah Kim Song, Fandi Ahmad, V Sundramoorthy, and Eric Paine once were?
If there is so little interest in local football and the Lions almost always lose to Asian teams, should public funding be cut?
Wrap Text field:
Or should football funding be raised because there is not enough financial support to make our national team successful?
On Sep 25, the ST Forum published two letters side by side. Both letters were in response to earlier letters regarding the current state of Singapore football.
As at 6pm on Oct 4, the first letter “Why funding should be raised” has generated zero Facebook 'shares' and zero 'likes', while the second letter “Why funding should be cut” has generated 815 Facebook 'shares' and 217 'likes'.
Does this mean that the majority of Singaporeans want taxpayer funding of local football to be cut? What do TRS readers think?
If public funding is cut, perhaps the Football Association of Singapore should rely on its president Zainudin Nordin (an MP in Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC) to help attract corporate sponsors.
