The proposal in the letter “Rethink undergrad studies abroad for public scholars” (Sept 19) shocked me. Our scholars are the ones who should have maximum exposure.
Living abroad, being exposed to different cultures, coming into contact with great minds from far and wide, and being challenged by ideas not available at home would ensure they do not return as frogs in a well. These may not come cheap, but that is the price for such experiences.
People may say proudly that Singapore has the best of this and that. It reminds me of a husband announcing on Facebook that his wife is the most beautiful one on earth.
Patriotism and national pride should not deny us the need for diversity of thought. Why do our institutions of higher learning and research agencies employ foreign talents? Why do global companies favour having employees with experiences beyond those of their native land?
Scarcity of local talent is not the only reason; quality takes precedence too. We also subsidise foreign students here even though many will not work here for the rest of their lives, as we want to build a network of educated people from other countries. Another good way to create lasting networks for Singapore is to send our scholars to network with the best of these countries.
Not everyone has the ability and means to study abroad. Anyone who has both should go. But I hope they return to share their improved selves as Singapore scholars.
