Dear TRS,
Is this really 'The Real Singapore'?
Singaporeans weren't like this when we first arrived here, years ago. We were welcomed and we tried our hardest to integrate well.
We are not on an assignment package - we work here on local terms, we pay our taxes and we are decent, hard-working people who obey the law and try to treat all people with kindness.
Some of the comments about 'white dogs' and 'foreign trash' that I've been seeing increasingly commonly, of late, are very worrying.
It seems as though Singapore is turning into a country of nationalistic, xenophobic people who get a kick out of bashing foreigners. I didn't want to leave Singapore with a bad taste in my mouth, but I think I will be, and sooner than I'd have liked.
This used to be a lovely country full of lovely people, but it's not, any more. And sadly, it's the locals (who seem to forget that a few generations ago, their families were immigrants themselves, simply in search of a better life for themselves and their children), who are sending the country downhill with this jingoistic, aggressive and even violent abuse of foreigners.
Please, think again. Look at yourselves.
There is good in everyone and it's worth remembering that. If we could all be kind to each other and live together in a spirit of acceptance, tolerance and compassion, everyone would be a lot happier.
