In Singapore, most low level jobs are filled in by workers from Bangladesh, India, China and other developing countries. They are the main workers in industries like Construction, Shipping and Recycling.
Because most of them aren't highly educated, there are people who've taken this chance to mislead them into exorbitant debt and horrible living conditions.
This potential exploitation was one of the predominant theories behind the Little India Riot in December last year, but the theory was rejected by the government here who insisted that workers are generally happy and in good living conditions here.
This goes against the experiences and anecdotal evidence from Non-Government organizations (NGOs) such as Transient Workers Count 2 who claim to help many foreign workers who face immense hardships in Singapore.
