Netizens have come up to blast their promotion and it probably means a pay increase for both Tan Chuan Jin and Lawrence Wong.
If I were to make a bold statement that Tan Chuan Jin's promotion is undeserving and shameful, I believe many netizens will agree with me.
Below are 5 good reasons why I think his promotion is unjustified.
1) MOM initiated a Fair Consideration Framework in 2013. Fair Consideration Framework hasn't even started and will only start in August this year. Under this Framework, employers will need to advertise in a national job bank before they open up the vacancies to foreigners.
Some netizens have said that this is not feasible as employers can find other ways to bypass this channels. So it begs the question, "Why promote Tan Chuan Jin when this Framework hasn't even been implemented and shown success yet?" I personally think it is a failure given so many cases shared on TRS of SG companies going specifically to cheap foreign countries just to recruit cheap labour and by-passing us Singaporeans. If that is true, shouldn't Tan Chuan Jin think he is doing a very bad job even though he has a background in economics as a govt scholar?

When you have 2 opposing sides of the news and they contrast each other in content, a discerning reader will know that something is not quite right with Tan Chuan Jin's promotion.

However, so far, MOM has only dared to take action against small ikan bilis companies. These 15 companies are SMEs which Singaporeans do not really care.
Tan Chuan Jin should be well aware of the discriminatory practices that happen in MNCs but refuse to tackle them. For example, when he graced the recent Star Awards 2014 event, he should be well aware that Mediacorp's unfriendly family practices. Late Actor Huang Wenyong and Jack Sim (TV Actor from Point of Entry) have blasted Mediacorp for their long hellish working hours until their health suffered. Our unions refuse to intervene as they are from NTUC.
If Tan Chuan Jin is sincere, he should intervene and demand that nobody in Mediacorp should work more than 7 days straight.
"Many Singaporeans know that once a Mediacorp artiste ages, the chances of you getting sacked is higher. Veteran Chinese drama actors such as Dai Peng and Huang Wenyong will attest to the fact. Tan Chuan Jin could have taken issue on this but because Temasek Holdings owns Mediacorp, Chuan Jin just doesn't have the balls to bring this matter up to the higher authorities"
5) Tan Chuan Jin's promotion does not mean that my life will improve.
In my current workplace (private sector), even if I do a good job, my chances of promotion is very slim as we depend on the profits we make in that year. My boss is also quite stingy and will claim all Wage Credits, Productivity Innovation Credits and profits for himself before distributing the bonus payout to us.
Compare this to my friend in public sector, they will get a Senior grade promotion and pay increase once they get a B average appraisal. But for many of us in the private sector, this is a different story altogether.
So why do we even pay top dollars to PAP leaders when we don't see significant changes?
