Roughly one hundred people gathered at Hong Lim Park on Sunday evening for a locally-organised event billed as an expression of "solidarity" for Malaysians calling for clean elections.Groups of people have gathered at Singapore’s Speakers’ Corner in Hong Lim Park to protest against the outcome of the Malaysian general election.
The event is organised by Singaporean activist Jolovan Wham in what he termed as a show of solidarity with Malaysians against their country’s recent elections.
Prior to the event, many netizens and several Facebook pages were calling for a boycott of this event while equally many others defended the event stating that Singaporeans & Malaysians are one big family and that we should our part as Singaporeans to defend democracy.
Pamphlets were distributed to attendees and messages penned down on paper supporting the cause.
During the event, one of the speaker Alfian Saat was apologizing on behalf of Singapore as a nation that do not conform to the international standards on freedoms. He said that he also faced a heckler who accused him of being Malaysian while he said that he will show him his Pink IC later.
Prior to the event, Mr Wham had posted on a Facebook page he created that foreigners would not be allowed to speak in the protest.
