Singapore is not a Democratic Nation

Dear Sir/Mdm,

I write as a concerned citizen of Singapore who sees a dark future ahead of us as a nation.

It is no surprise, especially in the wake of the recent news that Singapore rejected UN calls to set up an independent electoral body, that this government is determined to retain power without regard to legality or morality. Then again, legality is questionable seeing as our judiciary system and law are held in thrall of those who would seek to assert mastery over us.

But I digress.

My point is, there is no 'legal' avenue for us to triumph politically. Unless the PAP decides unilaterally to surrender power to a democratic process that unequivocally declares them the losers, there is no way the opposition can hope to make inroads into parliament.

And we all know of the PAP's absolute determination to retain power.

But ignoring that fact, and assuming the opposition somehow sweeps every seat, what then? How many aspects of Singaporean life does the PAP have in control? Whether directly or indirectly, through relatives, friends or business partners? Whether in the media, our economy, the military.. To what extent would the PAP go to in order to cling on to power?

The logical path for them to follow would mean the dissolving of democratic processes and the possible need to create and enforce a police state.

The judgement, then, is clear. The PAP does not need to retain political power to actually be in power.

I reiterate: There is no 'legal' avenue for us to triumph politically

But I write this message not in an attempt to sow despair into the heart of Singaporean resistance.

I write to bring light.

Because in so dire a situation, it will become fast apparent that the only way to seize power for the people would be through force of some kind, whether violent or not I do not know. What force? I leave it to your imagination.

I know so revolutionary a course of action may repel you and a majority of Singaporeans, preferring to stick to the trusty institutions of what shreds of democracy we have left, hoping that justice will prevail for the people. I assure you, I hope to god everyday that the dark future I paint never happens and peace can remain undisturbed here on our beautiful island.

But I must speak and consider too the cold, dark reality that is our world.

I write this to you because out of many independent news platforms, you consistently remain the most open-minded about any content, and I hope you can give this some thought.

And, if darkness befalls our island, that you will be prepared to do what it takes to spread the embers of freedom before it is too late.

I hope my anonymity can be assured here.

Regards,

Anonymous TRS reader
