Background Story: Nine Filipino construction workers arrive in Singapore, many more to come
Apartheid means the state of being apart. It was imposed harshly in South Africa segregating the different races there. The late Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for over 27 years fighting apartheid.
Now, the Philippines government wants their construction workers to be housed separately from other nationalities during their stay in Singapore.
The demand is made even before these Pinoy workers start work.
It has already generated a lot of controversy among Singaporeans who do not understand why the pinoys should be given preferential treatment. Predictably, it has led to Singapore-bashing by pinoys who are still working and living in Singapore.
