TRS reader Sandra was exasperated after being told by a Plaza Singapura staff that she should not breastfeed her child in the family lounge there.
She said she proceeded to the family lounge room because the nursing room was occupied.
Sandra elaborates:
"I had spent the afternoon shopping and having lunch with my three children (ages 5, 2 and newborn) and sister in law.
"My youngest child needed to be nursed.
"As the other room in the level was occupied we proceeded to the family lounge room so that I could nurse my baby in comfort.
"The employee at the counter was extremely rude and initially denied me entry as I wanted to breastfeed.
"This was even though I had presented her a receipt of having spent a minimum of $50. In fact I had spent at least $400.
"She told me breast feeding was not allowed and suggested that I proceed to the designated breast feeding rooms.
"I insisted that there was no such signs on display indicating that breast feeding was not allowed. Further more the room is vacant and my baby was crying.
"I was getting quite exasperated and told her to get her management down.
"In the end she let us in, but not without further retort.
"Before I could even start nursing the child, she came to the room and demanded that if anyone else came to the lounge I should leave as it is not 'nice to breastfeed in public'.
"I explained to her vehemently that breast feeding is a healthy and natural thing and should be encouraged.
"And it's not illegal to breast feed in public. For goodness sake, I always use a shawl as it certainly is not in my interest to boob flash strangers.
"Plaza Singapura should really look into the staff they employ to serve as this particular employee certainly is an oxymoron to the 'family lounge'."
