[Tan Jee Say, a candidate in the 2011 Presidential Election, has sent a letter to President Tony Tan, asking the President to convene an independent Commission of Inquiry (COI) to review all cases of arrest under the Internal Security Act (ISA). Mr Tan’s request was made on 2 February 2014 in the light of new evidence provided by declassified documents relating to Operation Coldstore from the British Government (‘Operation Coldstore: with the evidence before you, can you look the other way, Mr President?‘). The letter was copied to PM Lee.]

Now that the “back it up” evidence is available for this very serious charge, the President’s office has to be seen by Singaporeans to do what a President has to do. Not everyday is shaking hands, laugh laugh or eating good food. Sometimes, also have to do some work.“Dr Tony Tan rudely interjected to say it was ‘a very serious charge and one must be able to back it up’…”

Besides fulfilling his duty as the President, Dr Tony Tan has to also fulfill his duty as a Christian [Ed. President Tan is and has always been Anglican]. A Christian cannot do nothing in the face of injustice, he is obliged to speak up and, if within his power, to help as the good Samaritan did. Dr Tony Tan, you have the power vested in you to bring justice to the persecuted. Use that power to do good so that you can give a proper account of yourself when you meet St Peter at the pearly gates.

If Dr Tony Tan refuses to convene a COI in the face of mounting evidence such as this, he is neglecting his duty as a President. Will the next President not only convene a COI for “Operation Coldstore”, but will he also convene a COI to investigate Dr Tony Tan’s neglect of duties?

DO THE RIGHT THING, Mr President.
