Dear The Real Singapore,
I am a Singaporean who has applied to the September 2013 BTO exercise under the Singles Scheme for a two-room flat.
Under this product category, Type 1 and Type 2 is a different product due to the size specification. Type 2 flats are slightly bigger than Type 1 flats.
I needed a Type 2 because of the size constraints and have waited for my coming appointment with HDB on 28th Jan 2014.
After 2 months of wait, I was told before my appointment that all type 2 are taken up leaving only a balance 22 units of type 1 which is not what I wanted.
I understand that not everyone can get their ideal choices, but the current system is definitely unfair.
I was told by HDB that I can only choose from the 22 units of Type 1 or it will be considered 1 rejection at my end.
With a rejection, it becomes infinitely harder to secure a BTO flat which is obviously very undesirable so many people have no choice but to settle for an unsuitable flat type.
By forcing applicants to apply for 2-room flats but only giving them a "choice" of type 1 or type 2 at the time they actually select a flat, HDB is forcing people to buy flats that are not actually suitable for their needs.
Instead, there should be separate queues for the two flat types and applicants should be allowed to decide which type they want before even applying.
Why would anyone want to join the ballot queue when they don't even know what they are actually balloting for especially when rejecting a successful ballot is not really an option.
Is this a fair application process for Singaporeans? HDB is effectively forcing Singaporeans to buy bad flats at similar prices as better flats simply by restricting the choices available. Is this fair?
