I refer to http://therealsingapore.com/content/smrt-investigation-2-3-breakdowns-year-were-caused-our-staff
SMRT had blamed its own staff for the cause of the 2 major breakdowns that happened in January.
Sounds like an easy thing to do. Blaming others, yet they don't reflect on themselves. They seem to push the responsibility of whatever breakdowns to the maintenance staff or to the MRT driver.
Why don't you ask yourself, instead of disciplining the staff, why are they so 'negligent' lately? Or perhaps they are unhappy?
Personally, if my boss is an ex-army general, I would think that he only knows how to 'Push button', which means he just sits in this office and demands, demands and demands. If you're an ex general, you are probably running things 'Army Style'. I think 'Army Style' is inappropriate for a company. Army is army. Business is business. You can't mix them up.
I'm sure the staff aren't happy with this ruling. They are probably showing their unhappiness through these breakdowns and their 'negligence'. They're sending a message to the CEO, "Hey, our equipment are old, look at this and that. We need budget". But I guess their message wasn't heeded.
This shows that staff morale is very low. They probably don't feel appreciated by the company either.
So SMRT, before you point fingers at your maintenance staff, ask yourself, are you doing the right thing by disciplining them? Let me tell you, if you discipline them, stressing them even further, they'll leave the company. Their rice bowls destroyed. Do you even care? No. You have your million dollar salaries and you couldn't care less about other people.
So here's your reason why there are breakdowns. It's the lousy leadership of the upper personnel. Not the maintenance staff. Maybe someone should discipline you all instead of the maintenance staff.
You don't expect people to respect you because of your assumed title or position. Just because you're an ex general or the CEO, does not mean the people below you MUST respect you. That's not how you lead. Respect is earned and respect is 2 ways. So start respecting your staff and caring about their welfare before THEY respect you.
