PAP politicians need commitment plus charisma

It is wise for the People’s Action Party (PAP) to think about charisma, in addition to character and capability, as a desirable qualification for its potential candidates (“A little charisma can go a long way”; Nov 16).

The political landscape has changed so much lately that the party risks losing more ground if it sticks to its “business as usual” way of doing things.

With more of the old guard leaving the political scene, the younger group of PAP politicians must think about how to stanch the flow of support going to the opposition parties.

I agree with political correspondent Robin Chan that charisma alone will not be enough.

Candidates need to have commitment – we want to see more politicians who are there because they really want to serve the people, and less of those who have to be persuaded to leave their high-paying positions to “serve”.

We want politicians who show real dedication and steadfastness, and less of those who stay only when times are good and disappear when they lose an election.

Politicians must show that they are truly caring and compassionate. They need to really listen to people on the ground and take heed of their concerns.

And they should have the courage to speak out fearlessly on issues that are against the interests of the people.
